Saturday, February 18th, was the 47th anniversary of a historical civil rights mass meeting in my hometown of Marion, Alabama. On that night, Jimmie Lee Jackson was shot by an Alabama state trooper and died eight days later. His death spurred the Selma march that created worldwide headlines and is at the heart of my book.
